Wildcrafted vs. Homegrown Herbs: Why It Matters
Updated: Jul 28
When choosing herbal products, one of the most important questions often goes unasked:
Where did the herbs come from?
Whether herbs are carefully grown in a home garden, responsibly wildcrafted, or commercially produced, their origin plays an important role in quality, sustainability, and the story behind the finished product.
At Hi Vibe Honey Bees & Apothecary, we believe understanding where herbs come from helps you make more informed choices.
What Are Homegrown Herbs?
Homegrown herbs are cultivated intentionally by the grower rather than collected from wild populations.
Growing herbs at home allows the grower to carefully monitor every stage of the plant's life, including:
Soil quality
Watering practices
Harvest timing
Drying and storage
Overall plant health
Because the entire process remains under the grower's care, homegrown herbs often provide greater transparency from seed to finished product.
Many of the herbs we use are grown right here on our Southern Indiana property, where we can observe and care for them throughout the growing season.
What Does Wildcrafted Mean?
Wildcrafted herbs are plants that are responsibly harvested from their natural environment rather than cultivated in a garden or farm.
When practiced ethically, wildcrafting requires knowledge, patience, and respect for the surrounding ecosystem.
Responsible wildcrafters carefully consider:
Proper plant identification
Harvesting only healthy populations
Leaving plenty of plants behind to regenerate
Protecting wildlife habitat
Avoiding environmentally sensitive areas
Wildcrafting should always prioritize the long-term health of native plant populations.
Why Responsible Harvesting Matters
Not every plant grows well in cultivation.
Some herbs thrive naturally in woodlands, meadows, and other wild habitats where they develop under natural conditions.
However, harvesting from nature also carries a responsibility to protect those plant populations for future generations.
Ethical harvesting means taking only what is needed and ensuring that the surrounding ecosystem remains healthy.
Why We Use Both
At Hi Vibe Honey Bees & Apothecary, we believe both homegrown and responsibly wildcrafted herbs have an important place.
Whenever possible, we grow herbs ourselves so we can oversee every step of the process.
Some botanicals, however, are better suited to responsible wild harvesting or are sourced from trusted growers who share our commitment to quality and sustainability.
For herbs that we cannot grow or responsibly wildcraft ourselves, we carefully source them from reputable suppliers whose values align with our own.
Our goal is always the same:
To provide thoughtfully selected botanical ingredients while respecting both nature and the people who depend on it.
Choosing Quality Over Quantity
When selecting herbal products, consider asking questions such as:
Where were the herbs grown or harvested?
Who prepared the finished product?
Were the herbs responsibly sourced?
Is the company transparent about its ingredients?
Does the producer prioritize quality over mass production?
Understanding the story behind your herbs can be just as valuable as understanding the herbs themselves.
Our Commitment
Whether an herb is grown in our gardens, responsibly wildcrafted, or carefully sourced, we strive to use ingredients that reflect our commitment to quality, sustainability, and respect for nature.
Every product we create begins with thoughtfully selected botanicals and the belief that careful craftsmanship matters.
