If you've explored our website, you've probably noticed one statement that appears often:
Our bees are never fed sugar water.
For many people, that raises an obvious question:
"If you don't feed sugar water, what do you feed your bees?"
The answer reflects one of the core philosophies behind Hi Vibe Honey Bees & Apothecary.
Why Do Some Beekeepers Feed Sugar Water?
Sugar syrup is a common management tool used by many beekeepers. It may be offered during package installation, after splitting colonies, during periods of nectar scarcity, or to help colonies prepare for winter.
There are many reasons a beekeeper may choose to use sugar syrup, and different operations have different goals and management styles.
Our Philosophy
At Hi Vibe Honey Bees & Apothecary, we take a different approach.
We believe honey is the bees' natural food.
After spending countless hours collecting nectar, transforming it into honey, and storing it for times when flowers are scarce, we believe the bees should be able to keep the food they worked so hard to produce whenever possible.
Rather than harvesting every available frame, we intentionally leave our colonies with the honey they need to sustain themselves.
What Happens if a Hive Needs Help?
The health of our bees always comes first.
If a colony genuinely requires supplemental feeding, we provide honey—not sugar water.
Our goal is to support the colony while remaining as close as possible to the bees' natural diet.
Every situation is different, and responsible beekeeping always requires good judgment, but our commitment is simple: whenever possible, our bees eat honey.
Does Feeding Sugar Water Change Honey?
Honey sold as honey should come from nectar collected by bees—not from sugar syrup.
Responsible beekeepers who feed sugar syrup generally do so outside of honey production, allowing colonies time to consume the syrup before honey supers intended for harvest are added. Proper management is important regardless of the feeding method.
Our approach simply removes that concern entirely because our bees are never fed sugar water.
Why This Matters to Us
Our mission has never been to produce the largest honey crop possible.
Instead, we focus on producing exceptional honey while caring for healthy colonies through thoughtful, chemical-free beekeeping practices.
We believe quality begins with healthy bees, and healthy bees deserve the food nature intended for them.
Every Jar Reflects Our Philosophy
When you purchase honey from Hi Vibe Honey Bees & Apothecary, you're supporting more than a local beekeeper.
You're supporting an approach built on:
Chemical-free hive management
Honey as the bees' natural food source
Small-batch harvesting
Lightly strained honey
Honey that is never intentionally heated
Respect for the bees that make it all possible
Those values guide every decision we make, from the apiary to the jar.
