A simple, plant-based alternative to conventional laundry detergent. Soap nuts naturally contain saponins, compounds that create a mild cleansing action when agitated in warm water.

A traditional way to clean laundry—without conventional detergent.

Soap nuts, also known as soapberries, are the dried fruit shells of trees in the Sapindus genus. The shells naturally contain saponins, which act as surfactants and help water lift dirt and oils from fabric.

Simply place several soap nuts in a small reusable cloth bag and toss the bag directly into your washing machine. The same shells can typically be reused for multiple loads before their natural saponins are depleted.

How to Use:

Place 4–6 soap nuts in a small muslin or cotton bag and tie securely. Add directly to the washing machine with your laundry. Wash as usual. Remove the bag before transferring clothes to the dryer and allow the soap nuts to dry between uses.

For cold-water washing, soak the soap nuts in hot water for several minutes first, or make a concentrated soap-nut liquid, since warm water helps release the saponins.

When are they finished?

Replace the shells when they become very soft, pale, and no longer feel slightly slippery when wet. Used soap nuts are biodegradable and can be composted.

Why people love them:

Naturally occurring saponins • Simple, plant-based laundry care • Reusable for multiple loads • No added fragrance • Compostable when spent
